Sculpture at John S. Martinez School

June 20th, 2018 by Barry Svigals

This project brought sculptural imagery to the formal expression of the facades themselves. The sail-like shapes of the classrooms recall the boats that often raced in the adjacent harbor, while metaphorically expressing the power of education to propel students into the world.

At the same time, bricks were created by members of our office, the construction company, and representatives of the school community including children and adults.

After conversations about their aspirations for the school, they created individual sculptures that were cast and set into the facades.
