Jay Brotman, AIA—managing partner of Svigals + Partners, the New Haven, Conn.–based firm that designed the new Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, Conn.—will testify this afternoon before four White House Cabinet officials who are leading the administration's Federal Commission on School Safety: education secretary Betsy DeVos, attorney general Jeff Sessions, health and human services secretary Alex Azar, and homeland security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. The subject of Brotman's address will be "best practices that support open and positive learning environments that also enhance safety and security," according to the AIA.

Earlier this week, the AIA also announced Where We Stand: School Design and Student Safety, an AIA initiative "with steps that architects and the Institute can take to move forward educational design and student safety in the face of increasing violence in schools."
