Family Academy of Multilingual Exploration

Formerly Christopher Columbus Family Academy

A neighborhood was transformed and a community energized by the creation of this elementary school. Spaces were created for the community both inside and around the building. Operating round the clock and serving multiple constituencies, it is a true community resource.

Collaboration

As the design team worked with the teachers, science and art came together with the students sculpting weather patterns inspired by the wind and water currents on the facade.

Art Integration

Buildings that teach. Drawing upon the theme of "the winds of discovery", the expression of the school found in the artwork offered learning opportunities for all students.

Result

Resonating with the ecology of the city, strategies such as a new bus stop, sidewalk improvements and facade grants leveraged the vibrancy of the new school to resuscitate the entire community.
